Who Qualifies?

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program pays benefits to you and certain family members if you are “insured,” meaning that you worked long enough – recently enough – and paid Social Security taxes on your earnings. 

While the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are different, the medical requirements are the same. If you meet the non-medical requirement criteria, monthly benefits are paid if you have a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death.

Children younger than age 18 who have disabilities might be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.  Your child, if younger than age 18, can qualify if they have a medical condition or combination of conditions that meets Social Security’s definition of disability for children, and if his or her income and resources fall within the eligibility limits.
